The objective of setting a time limit for each response is to facilitate rapid, automatic recognition of the targets to be learnt by the student. If the student is consistently running out of time, the task you have created for them is too difficult. Please ensure that you have tried simplifying the task for the student by:

1. changing to a simpler task (e.g. if your student is having difficulty with blending - check to ensure they are competent at the letter-sounds task)

and/or

2. reducing the number of tiles on the screen (you could try just 2 or 3 items at a time)

and/or

3. reducing the 'end score' in activities.

It is very important that students develop rapid, automatic skills as reading involves rapid, automatic recognition of stimuli.

Please see the 'Custom Activity' section in the manual if you would like to read information about how to customise/simplify activities.

Occasionally, especialy in the case of children with severe difficulties, ensuring that you are attempting a simpler task (such as letter-sounds vs blending), reducing the number of items on the screen to just 2 or 3 and reducing the end score may still not be enough to ensure that the child can successfully identify a target. We are considering adding an option to disable the timer in an upcoming update to the program fo this reason.
